Screenwriting Classes at IFP Minnesota

I told you a while back that I was embarking on new writing path for me—screenwriting. I must confess that my goal of being done with a first draft by December is looking doubtful as I have just begun to conceptualize it, and regretfully have not one single word written. If anyone else decided to write a screenplay of their own, I just wanted to tip y’all off about these two classes at IFP Minnesota that might be of interest to you.

ELEMENTS OF SCREENWRITING

(IFP certification available)
Instructor: Bix Skahill
8 sessions: Thursdays, Oct. 2 – Nov. 20, 6:30-9:30 pm
Registration deadline: Sept. 25
Tuition: $265/$225 members
Max enrollment: 12 students
The course goal is to provide the beginning screenwriter with the tools and information necessary to get started on their first-draft screenplay, the first pages of which will be workshopped during the final two class sessions. In this course you will learn:

  • What constitutes a scene and how it works toward creating forward action
  • How to keep dialogue short—but effective
  • Making characters memorable
  • Tricks for brainstorming plot points
  • Tips on marketing and promoting your finished script
  • The basics of the screenplay in format and content and how it translates into a finished film
THE BUSINESS OF SCREENWRITING

Instructor: Bix Skahill
2 sessions: Saturdays, Nov. 1 & 8, 10am-1pm
Registration deadline: Oct. 25
Tuition: $145/$110 members
Max enrollment: 8 Students
One half of a professional screenwriter’s life is spent writing; the other half is selling themselves and their work. This seminar covers what happens after you pen your screenplay. Learn how the Hollywood screenwriting sales system really “works,” including how to write to pitch your project to producers, how to network,and other important tips for how to succeed in the world of film.
